Simple Seasonal Projects in a Snap: Hanging Towels

The June Tailor Quilt As You Go Hanging Towel kit is fun to make and an easy way to change up your look with ease. Here’s what you’ll get in each kit:

  • Printed batting for one towel
  • 100% cotton waffle weave toweling
  • Instructions

You get to add the fun touch by picking out 3 different fabrics for each kit or season. You’ll also need some Velcro or a coordinating button. We’ll talk about some fun ways to embellish your finished projects a little later.

Helpful Tips

Here are some tips on the basic construction of your hanging towels:

  • Read the instructions that come with the kit, they will take you step by step through assembly.
  • Don’t skip washing and drying your toweling piece! It will become wonderfully fluffy and absorbent.
  • Prepping your fabrics with Starch Savvy will help you get really nice, crisp edges.
  • Don’t forget to use pins to help making the accordion folds.

Toweling after it is washed and dried.

Get Creative!

There are so many fun ways to really make these towels your own! Start with your fabric selections. I love to collect fat quarters of prints that I love but have no idea what I’m going to do with them! For me, this includes cute seasonal prints. Have you ever picked up fat quarters thinking they would be perfect to use in a project for a friend or family member? Now is the time to use those up and make them something really useful! This is also a great project for fun novelty prints.

Try different trim options - fabric, ribbons or ric rack maybe? Maybe layer them up for more impact!
Have fun with your fabric choices.

Applique, Anyone?

AccuQuilt has dies to make cutting applique shapes for any season a snap, so let’s look at some that would be great additions to some seasonal towels. Look for smaller shapes to use, since the center section of the towel is approx. 3” wide. Here are a few suggestions:

Embroidery Time

If you have an embroidery machine, using AccuQuilt’s free, downloadable outline embroidery with the shapes will give you such a professional looking finished project. Our website is full of amazing, more complex embroidery design that are available to purchase that would size well with this project. Here are a couple of my favorites, but there are too many for me to include them all. Be sure to check them all out!

Something Different

Maybe, you want to change your look often, but don’t have space for 12 different towels! Think about making 4 with different colors. Then, you can an extra bit of hook and loop tape to the top so you can add an applique shape and easily change it out.

Here’s an example of what you can do using the GO! Shamrock die. I fused 2 pieces of green fabric together before I cut the shape out with my die, then I added a zigzag stitch to the outside edge!

They sky is the limit for ways you can personalize your towels for every season and occasion you can imagine. If you’re looking for more inspiration, be sure to check the Jan. 17 AccuQuilt Live show live, or the recorded version at any time on our website, Facebook or YouTube.
