I recently attended the inaugural Blue Mountains Frocktails event, hosted at the beautiful Carrington hotel in the heart of Katoomba. It’s a grand old hotel so required an equally luxe look. This emerald liquid look satin caught my eye and I immediately knew it needed to be something drapey with layers. I browsed my Pinterest board and found the perfect inspiration! I had just the pattern in my stash for the skirt and mashed it with a vintage-style pattern for the top half to make it a dress.

Cutting this baby out was a mission! All those flounces! But once I started to sew it came together pretty quick.

The main hurdle with this make was hemming those flounces. I recalled a technique a friend who is a couturier taught me for this. I turned the hem up 1.5cm, stitching as close as possible to the edge, cut the excess away with my duckbill scissors, pressed, then turned again and stitched on the same line. This worked a treat for the flounces on the skirt as well as the sleeves.

I felt it needed a little something extra, so I added these cute butterfly motifs to the shoulders

Pretty happy with this make, and my creative 3.0 handled this liquid silky satin with ease!

Until next time, Happy sewing
