Sewing Machine Cover Cutting

Construction:

Seam allowance is 12mm unless otherwise specified.

  1. Iron on interfacing to the wrong side of pocket fabric.
  2. Fold the pocket fabric in half lengthwise so you have a rectangle. The right sides should be facing out. There should be one folded edge and 3 raw edges.
  3. Iron on the fusible fleece to the wrong side of one of the cover sized rectangles. (This will become the outside of your cover.)
Tip: Be careful to place the fusible side to the wrong side of the fabric. Follow the instructions for the fusible fleece. When you are pressing do not press directly on the fleece. It will melt and stick to your iron.
  4. Place the folded pocket on top of the front cover with the fusible fleece. Line up the raw edges on the bottom. Pin in place.
Sewing Machine Construction 4
  1. Using a straight stitch, sew 6mm around the unfinished edges of the pocket through all layers. REMOVE pins before you sew over them.
  2. Mark lines on the main pocket to make smaller pockets as you would like. Mark and sew at least 1 line on the large pocket to prevent it from gaping. We suggest two lines so you will have 3 smaller pockets in total.
Sewing Machine Construction 6
  1. Stitch over your drawn lines. Here you can choose to do a straight stitch or choose a decorative stitch on your machine.
  2. Cut the ribbon into 4 x 38cm pieces.
  3. Place the ribbon just above the pocket on each side. Line up ribbon with the bulk of the ribbon laying on the front cover (inside). If needed, roll up and pin the ribbon so only a small end will be shown.
Sewing Machine Cover 9
  1. Stitch in place with a straight stitch using a 6mm seam allowance.
  2. Repeat steps 9 and 10 on the other end of the cover.
  3. Place cover front piece (has the fusible fleece) and the cover right sides together. Pin.
  4. Stitch around the outside, ensuring you leave a 10cm opening at the top middle.
Tip: For the opening, find the center of the top short edge (the one without the pocket). Place a pin. Measure 5cm to each side of the center and place a pin. Start marking your seam line. You will sew along the lines when you make the seam.
  5. Trim across corners of the cover before you turn it right side out. This removes the bulk from the corners.
Sewing Machine Cover construction 14
  1. Turn right side out and press. Use a point turner to make each corner crisp.
  2. Place your cover under your presser foot. Change your stitch length to 3.0 for topstitching.
  3. Using the right side of the foot as your guide, sew completely around the cover. This will close the opening and give your cover a nice finish.
  4. Congratulations you have finished your sewing machine cover!
