Block-Out Curtains

If you have an older style apartment and need to block out an entrance that has no door, a simple rod and block-out curtain can assist in keeping in heat and blocking off the light when required. Choose fabric that is heavyweight so that it sits firmly in place.

Requirements List:

  • Block-out Fabric large enough to cover your doorway with extra seam allowance added. We used 1.5m wide x 2.4m length
  • Matching sewing machine thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Rotary cutter, mat and ruler
  • Curtain rod and hoops (we used a black rod with 4cm hoops)
  • Pins

Preparation:

  1. To determine how large your curtain needs to be, measure your doorway.
  2. Layout your fabric on a large flat surface and fold over the top, bottom and side edges as required. Pin in place and press.
  3. Ensure the height of your fabric is long enough to go above the door frame and allows for the rod rings.

Construction:

  1. The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 was used as this machine has an extra-large extension table which is very handy when sewing large amounts of fabric. The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 also has an extra-high presser foot lifter which is suitable for thick fabrics.
  2. Fold over the top hem 2cm then fold over another 2cm. This is where you will sew on your hoops.
  3. The Singer Quantum Stylist 9960 comes with 600 built-in stitches. Decorative stitch number 70 was used as it blended well with the pattern on the fabric. This stitch was used for the bottom hem. The bottom hem was also 2cm x 2cm.

It is a good idea at this stage to hold your fabric up to your doorway to ensure you have the correct length. Don’t forget to add on the height of your hoops from where your rod will be installed.
