SINGER®: Our efforts towards a greener future.

At SINGER® Australia we have a strong commitment to sustainability practices and reducing our carbon footprint in support of the planet’s future.

Alongside our parent company, Blessington PTY LTD, we have a committed partnership with The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO), a not for profit organisation leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia. We are committed to partnering with both APCO & the Government along with other local industry members to reduce the harmful impact of packaging on the Australian environment and achieve sustainable packaging outcomes.

We will continue to do our very best to reduce emissions through the processes in which we operate. Achieving a truly sustainable earth is a task for everyone, and we will do what we can to support our customers to lead environmentally conscious lifestyles. Here are some tips for you to consider on your path to sustainable sewing.

Sewing for sustainability

The best way to reduce your carbon footprint as a consumer (and a sewing enthusiast) is to use your passion for sewing to reduce your textile waste. Mending clothes for yourself and your loved ones is an easy way to reduce waste and unnecessary spending. In these tough economic times you can turn to your sewing machine for support with mending and creating more for your wardrobe for a fraction of the cost of retail clothing stores.

Conscious consumerism helps our environment by reducing purchases that are destined for landfill due to the short shelf-life of fast-fashion. When you sew your own, you build it to last. Even if it needs a few rounds of mending, it's much better than garments built quickly for a short fashion cycle. Did you know that handmade clothes are more likely to be accepted by second hand stores than fast fashion garments?

Service your machine

A serviced machine is a happy machine. Much like your car, regular servicing can keep your machine running smoothly for longer. Taking care of your machines is the best way to prevent them from ending up in landfill. Our FAQs have some great tips for maintaining your machine at home. Contact us to get your machine serviced in New South Wales, or head to one of the dealers in your state to get your machine into tip top condition.

Dispose Responsibly

If your machine has reached the end of its useful life, please don’t put it in the wheelie bin. Our electric machines have computerised components, and once in the bin, they contribute to e-waste which can cause havoc in our already overflowing landfills. Thankfully, there are resource recovery services that specialise in electronics waste and can break down your old machine into parts, salvaging as much re-purposable material as possible. These recovery services can repurpose metal, screens, computer chips, plastic and more. Our mechanical machines won’t contribute to the e-waste epidemic, but they are built with heavy duty metal frames that are a resource collector’s delight. Repurposed materials from broken machines can go on to become incredible things, sometimes even new sewing machines!

If you’re ready for an upgrade or you have an old machine that you just don’t use anymore, you should consider donating it to charity to spread the love of sewing to someone in need.
