Why this foot: If you’re looking for a way to give your garments a polished, ready-to-wear finish, the Blind Hem Foot is your secret weapon. It makes hemming fast, fuss-free, and nearly invisible—without needing to hand stitch. With a clever guide built into the foot, your fabric stays perfectly aligned while your stitches catch just enough of the hem. The result? A clean, professional look that works beautifully on trousers, skirts, dresses, and even home décor projects.

Sewing Instructions
Step 1: Prepare your hem
Turn up your hem allowance and press in place. Fold the hem back under so that only a small edge (about 6mm / ¼") of the hem extends beyond the fold. This creates a “zigzag path” where your blind hem stitch will catch the fabric.

Step 2: Attach the foot and select your stitch
Snap on the Blind Hem Foot and choose the blind hem stitch on your PFAFF machine. Adjust the needle swing so that it just bites into the folded edge of the fabric.

Step 3: Test on a scrap
Use a piece of the same fabric to test your stitch. You want the straight stitches to fall neatly on the hem edge, and the zigzag “bite” to just skim into the fold without showing too much on the right side. Adjust the guide on the foot and your stitch width if needed.

Step 4: Sew your hem
Align the fold of your fabric against the guide on the Blind Hem Foot. Sew slowly, letting the guide keep the fabric in place as you stitch. The machine will alternate between straight stitches in the hem and tiny zigzag “bites” into the fold.

Step 5: Press and admire
Unfold the hem and press it flat with steam. On the right side, you’ll see only the faintest little stitches—nearly invisible, especially if you’ve chosen a matching thread.

Where to use blind hems:
Blind hems are perfect for any project where you want your hem to disappear. Think tailored trousers, sleek skirts, and dresses where a visible topstitched hem would distract from the design. They’re also excellent for curtains and table linens when you want a clean, professional edge.

My project example:
For my project, I used the Blind Hem Foot to finish the hem of a dress that featured some pop-up embroidery. Instead of a bulky stitched line, the hem is smooth and almost invisible—letting the embroidery be the star. It was quick to sew and gave the garment a boutique-quality finish that I know I’ll use again and again.
Final Tip
If you’re working with tricky fabrics like lightweight wovens or knits, use a fusible hem tape to stabilise the edge before blind hemming. This makes it easier to control and gives your stitches extra security.
And don’t forget—your PFAFF machine has a separate blind hem stitch option for knit fabrics, so your hems can stretch without popping stitches. Perfect for jersey dresses, leggings, or any stretch project.
Happy sewing!
