Fabric weights are used to help keep your fabric and patterns in place when cutting with scissors or a rotary cutter, keeping your cuts as accurate as possible. This is also a great project to use up some of your scraps and add some fun colours to your sewing room.
Finished fabric weight size is approximately 9cm x 9cm. If you would like them smaller or larger, adjust your rectangle size.
Requirements:
- fabric scraps of your choice. 1 Fabric weight is 21cm x 11cm rectangle.
- Lightweight fusible interfacing
- Co-ordinating thread
- Sewing machine
- Hand sewing needle
- Point turner
- Scissors
- Rice or another similar filling for your weight.
Cutting:
- Cut rectangle to 21cm x 11cm. This will create 1 fabric weight. Cut as many rectangles as you require.
Construction:
- Fold rectangle in half with right sides together, matching the 11cm sides. Pin along two sides.
- Sew a 6mm seam, along with two of the pinned edges. Trim the corner point.
- Turn right side out.
- To create the triangle shape, pull the opening so that the bottom seam is in the center.
- Turn the open edge in by 6mm pin and press in place.
- Fill with your uncooked rice or similar filling.
- Sew your opening closed with a small slip stitch. Ensure your hand stitches are small, so the rice doesn’t escape from this seam.
Note: An optional use - fill with crushed walnut shells to create the bonus of a pincushion. You will never have to search for pins again!
