DIY Halloween Costume Ideas

Spooky season is almost here and what better way to get ourselves ready for the occasion than looking back at some of the most iconic celebrity Halloween costumes throughout the years?

If you’re struggling to decide what to dress up as this year, this article might just help to spark some inspiration. Why not try to recreate these costumes yourself with your trusty SINGER® Sewing Machine?

Halloween Costume Idea 1: Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas as Morticia and Gomez Adams

First up on the list is Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas channelling Morticia and Gomez Addams. Morticia Addams is a perfect DIY Halloween costume idea, as she is an iconic character from The Addams Family cartoon, originating in The New Yorker in 1938. This costume is equal parts eerie and elegant. The perfect combination for any Halloween event or party.

To recreate this glamorous look, you’ll need to start with a black floor-length gown. Ideally, the pattern you use will also feature long sleeves and a V-neck. One of our favourite kinds of Halloween projects is when you can re-use the look in your everyday life!

To truly become Morticia, long dark hair is essential. If you’re not lucky enough to have naturally inky locks, we recommend finding a simple black wig. To add the finishing touches, you’ll need a pale, grey-ish complexion, a bold red lip with matching nails, and a smokey eye. We also love how Sophie has accessorised, with a beautiful bouquet of red roses.

If you or your partner would prefer to dress up as Gomez, all you’ll need is a sharp suit and tie, and his signature moustache.

Halloween Costume Idea 2: Gigi Hadid as The Mask

If you want to go all out for Halloween this year, this gender-neutral Gigi Hadid look is for you! Based on Jim Carrey’s iconic portrayal of Stan Ipkiss in the 1994 film, The Mask. All you need to recreate this look yourself is a tailored yellow suit, white button-up, patterned tie and a yellow hat with a feather.

This is a super DIY-friendly Halloween costume that you can make with any suit pattern. If you’re a perfectionist like us, you can also match the lining of the suit to the tie and pocket square. To finish the look you’ll need quite a bit of green paint to create the pièces de résistance, The Mask!

Halloween Costume Idea 3: Bella Hadid & The Weekend as Lydia and Beetlejuice

Next is another Hadid sister, and it-girl of Halloween, Bella Hadid. She stepped out in 2018 with The Weekend. Bella was dressed in Lydia’s wedding dress from the cult-classic movie, Beetlejuice. This is a bit more of a complex sewing project and is suited to advanced sewists. The costume is essentially an 80s-inspired tulle and lace wedding dress, made entirely of red fabrics. The dress features a layered and voluminous skirt and at the top, a lace overlay with big sleeves. Some gothic elements to complete the look include black combat boots, dead roses, spikey hair and some death-inspired makeup.

If you’re not at a level where you can sew this yourself from scratch, we recommend scouring your local op shops for second-hand wedding dresses. Then, you can simply die it red. You can also customise the existing dress to make it your own.

This is a great Halloween costume option for couples, or people who prefer a more modest outfit for Halloween.

Halloween Costume Idea 4: Taylor Swift Era’s Tour

Our next idea isn’t technically a celebrity Halloween costume. But, it’s inspired by none other than Taylor Swift. If you’re planning to attend this year’s Halloween event with your Swiftie friends, why not all go as different Taylor Swift Eras. Take your pick from albums like Fearless, Red, Reputation, Lover and Folklore. You can also be inspired by some of the show-stopping looks from Taylor’s Eras tour.

If you’ve got a lot of time on your hands, and a lot of rhinestones, why not recreate her iconic bedazzled bodysuit. If you prefer a more boho style, you can choose from any of her witchy Folklore and Evermore outfits. If you’re attending any of the Eras concerts in February, you can even reuse the look then!

Halloween Costume Idea 5: Any Heidi Klum Look

Saving arguably the best for last, we can’t forget the queen of Halloween herself: Ms Heidi Klum. Known for her large-scale annual Halloween parties and spectacular costumes, Heidi always brings Halloween to another level.

Some of our favourite looks she’s created so far include the Shrek and Fiona costumes, as well as her recreation of Jessica Rabbit. What we love about Heidi’s looks is her commitment. She always goes all out and is committed to truly looking like her character. If you’re looking for some Halloween costume ideas, these two looks are essentially just gowns. With the right patterns, you could recreate them yourself!

If you want something a little different from the classic witch, vampire, or pirate Halloween costumes this year, we hope this article helped you. These celebrity-inspired, DIY Halloween costume ideas should spark some inspiration for a costume that’s a little different. If you give yourself enough time to plan, construct and perfect your Halloween costume this year, the sky’s the limit for what you can create. Happy sewing and have a spooktacular Halloween.
