    Isaac Merritt Singer invents the world’s first practical sewing machine.

    Patent issued for the first SINGER brand Sewing Machine on August 12, 1851.

    The SINGER brand is awarded the first prize at the World’s Fair in Paris, France. That same year, SINGER becomes the largest selling brand of sewing machines internationally.

    Edward Clark put forward an idea of sales on installments, and this method started to be utilized. Accordingly, Singer became the first company to initiate the method of sales on installments on the world. Persons, who cannot afford to purchase sewing a machine, can have a machine too.

    Singer initiated its operations in its building numbered Broadway 149 in New York. Consisting of 47 floors, the building was the-then highest skyscraper.

    Singer opened its first free sewing course in New York, and became the first company to deliver training, sewing and embroidery in the world.

    Singer manufactured the first vacuum cleaner, showing that its design and manufacturing power was not limited to sewing machine only.

    Overall American sales of sewing machines drop. SINGER brand attributes this to the Flapper social trend, featuring emancipated women who were moving away from traditional homemaker role.

    The Featherweight™ 221 sewing machine is introduced at the Chicago World’s Fair. This machine stays in production for over 30 years and remains as an iconic image of the SINGER brand.

    SINGER brand ceases development of sewing machines to focus on producing war time goods.

    SINGER brand’s 600 sewing centers have trained an estimated 400,000 housewives.
