This is a fun and very achievable little project to get you playing with free motion quilting, and the best part is it will use up the little bits of scraps you already have in your quilt/sewing room!
Supplies you will need:
- 15″ x 22″ light coloured background fabric – I used calico
- Scraps of coloured fabric for the applique (largest you’ll need is approx. 2″ x 2″)
- Scrap of vlisofix (approx. 4″ x 6″ will do it)
- 16″ x 23″ backing fabric
- 16″ x 23″ batting
- Black & Cream top thread (I used WonderFil Konfetti)
- Black & cream bobbin thread (I use WonderFil prewound DecoBob bobbins)
- Blue wash out fabric marker
- Sharpie or biro
- Quilting machine or your domestic sewing machine set up to free motion quilt.
Trace the applique pieces on to your fusible web/vlisofix. roughly cut out, iron on to the back of your scrap fabrics. Cut out the applique pieces on the line.
lay the backing fabric over the “Pattern Placement” pattern, peel the paper from the back of the applique pieces and place on the backing fabric matching numbers. Iron to fuse.
Once cool, draw in the flower stems with your water soluble fabric marker.
Sandwich your top, bating and backing – ready to quilt in part 2!
